In my women's studies class, some girl said that she believes in equal rights but she's not "radical" enough to be a feminist.

Boo.

Anyway, I'm going to Evergreen in the fall and I think you should come :P

I see this with all sorts of movements: the radicals claim their positions as the only acceptable ones, speak louder than anyone else, become the public face of the movement, and then leave everyone to deal with the resulting stereotypes for decades to come.

The way people still think that to be a feminist you have to be Valerie Solanas reminds me of the way people still think that modern classical music is all difficult, abstruse, hyper-complex, atonal and pulseless, even though that style has largely fallen out of favor in the US, just because the people who were doing that in the 60s claimed to be the only real modern composers, and relegated everyone who was interested in tonality, regular rhythm or pop culture to the aesthetic sidelines.
